Life After Gastric Bypass Surgery

Experience and information from a Gastric Bypass Postop RNYer

Visit with the Dietician

3/28/07
I was half an hour late for my dietician’s appointment. Little did I know, it takes 2 1/2 hrs (instead of 2 hrs) to get to L.A. from Glendale during rush hour. Fortunately, the dietician was very, very nice, and let me see her anyways. She went over the pre-op diet, in-hospital diet and post-op diet. I’m expected to get in 80 grams of protein. Wow! That’s a lot of protein. I’m pretty sure I’ll be getting some of that from protein shakes. She said after a while, maybe 6 months, they might be able to cut down on the protein.

She also went over my food record and told me ways to cut down on calories now, which made sense. She also re-emphasized starting to change some of my habits now before being forced to do so.

I have given up diet pepsi and carbonated drinks and don’t miss it. I did cut down to one cup of coffee a day but screwed up and didn’t get enough sleep and now I’m up to 3 cups. I am going to make sure I get enough sleep so I can go back to my 1 cup in preparation for cutting it out altogether.

I’ve been mostly good at not eating and drinking;however, I have had difficulty doing this with dry food such as pretzels. I will not be able to eat those for 6 months after surgery so it might not be an issue.

My visit with the dietician was good.
