Life After Gastric Bypass Surgery

Experience and information from a Gastric Bypass Postop RNYer

Soup is Not My Friend

Well, ever since I started eating soup twice a day, my weight loss not only ground to a halt but I went up about 1 1/2 lbs. I know it is only fluid retention due to the extra sodium but it still sucks.

I cannot drink the Isopure Zero Carb Vanilla anymore. It completely grosses me out, but I need that protein. So…yesterday I headed on over to Vitamin Shoppe and got a sampling of several protein drinks, including the Isopure Zero Carb fruity drinks. Somehow I don’t think “zero carb” is synonymous with “tastes good.” I tried the Alpine Punch and it took me all day to drink it. It tastes like strawberry sugar-free jello in liquid form…i.e. not good. I won’t be getting that again.

The good news is they told me that I can bring back something I don’t like to exchange it for something else. As soon as I decide which of these new protein drinks I like, I’ll be heading back there.

I think I forgot to mention that I went back to work Monday, and felt fine. I missed my coworkers and they missed me. I work with some great guys. The only problem is the heat is kickin’ my butt, and I’m finding it impossible to walk. I’m fine when I’m indoors but as soon as I walk out in the 80-90-degree heat, I feel like my energy has been instantly sucked out of me. I’m going to try walking at home indoors. It’s better than nothing.

I ate egg drop soup today. OMG, it was soooo good! The half size looked like half a liter but I only had 8 oz. Sometimes I wonder if there is something wrong with me. Did they make my pouch too big or my stoma too big? They tell me I’m only supposed to be drinking 4-6 oz. at a time, but I’ve never had a problem drinking 8 oz ., even right after getting out of the hospital. However, eating more solid things, like the yogurt, definitely are different. While I can eat half a cup, I do feel a fullness feeling half way through, and have to slow down, so I guess I do have a pouch after all.

Tomorrow I get to start mushies. Cottage cheese and refried beans, here I come! Woohoo! I don’t think I’m gonna be doing the baby food thing, but who knows. Never say never. It’s funny because I love love love cottage cheese, but unless I’m on a diet, I forget all about it. Why do we junk food junkies do that to ourselves? We become so blind-sided by the junk food that we forget about the healthy foods we actually like.

5 of my steri-strips are off. How do I feel about the belly scars? Bleh! No one will be seeing my belly so it’s no biggie. Some of them look like they’re going to heal without a trace.

Oh man! My mouth is watering for cottage cheese already. I didn’t buy it yet because I knew it would be too tempting. Okay, no more talk about food. I’m looking forward to the Labor Day weekend. Just like the Terminator, I’ll be back!
